What Is A Good Side Hustle

What Is A Good Side Hustle

As I was driving into work this morning I heard Chris Guillebeau (author of many books on the side hustle entrpreneurship) being interviewed on the radio show. What caught my attention was the radio host asking “So, what is a good side hustle anyway?”

They were mid interview and the phrase “side hustle” caught my attention. Pretty well everybody knows what it means – something you do on the side to “hustle” up some extra cash, right?

Chris went on to discuss how many side hustles are things a person is already doing. Except he or she gets a little structure, a little marketing, and sets up their skill or hobby to bring in some income.

And that made me think of a couple (short story, don’t worry!) I read about recently who escaped from a cult after twenty plus years of making ten or so dollars a week (that’s a long story which I won’t tell).

They got located first in a cheap room, then a small apartment with a little help. They had no identification papers or resume when they got out. So how to start working in the real world? Well, they were handy.

They started collecting used furniture from the trash and from thrift stores. They would refinish and repair these items and sell at a huge profit, considering the original low or no price.

This became a full time job for them for a while. They made a decent living from it.

Good Side Hustle Ideas

Repair/refurbish/resell furniture is just one of many good side hustle ideas. I think of an elder person I knew a while back.

He really hated being retired. He spent a lot of time driving his wife crazy, being at her elbow constantly. At one point he joined one of those time consuming semi religious MLM’s and had boxes all over the house. His wife threatened divorce.

And he was a really good carpenter. I’d seen the items he’d made in their home, quite refined pieces.

They didn’t really need money for basics, but would have enjoyed more. And I can’t help but think if I was his neighbor now, I’d lean over the fence and say “Hey Hank, have you ever thought of repairing furniture and selling it?”

He would have been great at this, and I bet he would have made good money. I have to apologize to his wife belatedly for not thinking of that.

Side Hustles Make Money

Chris Guillbeau is emphatic that side hustles make money. He states that people often end up making a good living, and quit their day jobs.

His book “Side Hustle: From Idea To Income in 27 Days”, is available on Amazon.  (That link is a sponsored link, and I’ll explain more about different kinds of links below).

Chris says:

“You don’t need entrepreneurial experience to launch a profitable side
hustle. You don’t need a business degree, know how to code, or be an
expert marketer. And you certainly don’t need employees or investors.”

How About Blogging For A Side Hustle

My website here is all about how to learn to make a good blog, for either the purpose of hobby writing, or a side hustle to make more money.

For seniors in retirement or disabled people who need to get paid to work from home, blogging is a really good solution.

And if you are in that position right now, you don’t necessarily know how to do that, do you? I am going to tell you how to find out.

For instance, that book title above is linked to Amazon. It is an affiliate link.

What that means is I will get a commission from Amazon if you click on that link, and buy the book. It doesn’t change your price if you get to Amazon this way, or just by signing in to your Amazon account.

Now picture this…What if you are a book lover and read all the time? Do you like talking about books you enjoy?

If so, a side hustle blog for you could be writing book reviews about the books you’ve read, with links to where book lovers could purchase them.

Do you think you could write about the things you like? You have your favorite things, don’t you? Things to do with:

  • Phones
  • Computers
  • Cars
  • Kitchens
  • Garages
  • Gardens
  • Toys
  • Drones (that link goes to another website, but is not an affiliate link, just to illustrate)
  • Jewelry
  • Bed And Bath
  • Patio Furniture (that link goes to a Category on a website)
  • Survival Equipment
  • Hockey Equipment
  • BBQ cookers and equipment
  • Indoor gardening supplies
  • Smart devices that work with Alexa
  • Camping gear
  • Solar powered items
  • Pet accessories

It is endless isn’t it? So much to like, so much to talk about.

And you don’t have to be a writer to communicate about products you can recommend.laptop on wooden table

Yet, of course there are ways to organize your pros and cons about an item you’d like to share with others (and get a little hustle income!)

  1. Hi
Some great ideas for side hustles! I must suggest to my daughter that she buy furniture and do it up. She would be really good at that but I’d never though of that – thanks for the idea.

  2. Thanks so much for this information.

I have always looked for a way to earn extra cash on the side, and this post offers some great ideas.

I always remember having a sale of some of my old CD’s and Vinyl Records in the past, and that brought in some extra money for me.

This is excellent information though and has opened my eyes to other avenues.

    Thanks

    Chris

    • Hi Chris. Thanks for visiting here and leaving your thoughts. I know a friend’s son sold his teen card collection and bought a house at auction. Amazing! We often have resources and talents that we’re unaware of.
